The Emperor Temmu
started to construct the temple in the 9th year of Temmu era (680), wishing
for the recovery from the illness of the Empress, and completed in the
11th year of the Jito era (697) in Fujiwara-kyo capital. Later,with the
transfer of the capital to Nara, the temple was moved to the present site
in the 2nd year of the Yoro era (718). The temple has two three-storied
pagodas (Eastern and Western Pagodas) centering around Golden Hall and
Lecture Hall. The arrangement style of the temple is very unique, and
is called "Yakushi-ji style arrangement."
