Toshodai-ji Temple
was founded by Tang Dynasty's Priest Ganjin in the 3rd year of Tempyo-hoji
era (759). The name of the temple is derived from the word "Shodai" meaning
the Buddhist training site shared with an Enlightened Person, or Ganjin,
who came to Japan from the Tang Dynasty. The temple precincts with various
halls including the Lecture Hall, the Treasure House, and the Golden Hall
nicknamed "Tempyo Tiled Roofs" are vividly reminiscent of the Tempyo style
architecture.
