Saidai-ji Temple

The Saidai-ji Temple was founded by the Imperial order of the Empress Shotoku in the 1st year of the Tempyo-jingo era (765). A large number of buildings stood in the vast precincts at that time, which clearly indicates that this temple prospered along with the Todai-ji Temple. In and after the 13th year of the Jowa era (846), the temple was burnt down several times; as a result, most of the original buildings were lost. Eison of the Kamakura period restored the temple, but it was razed again during the age of civil strife in the 15th century. The remaining structures like the Main Hall, the Aizen Hall, the Shio-do Hall, etc., were reconstructions in the mid-Edo period.
