UCHIWA-MAKI (Fan-throwing Ceremony)

This is a festival observed as a reminder of the eminent virtue of the high priest Kakujo, who acted as the restorer of the temple in the Kamakura period. On this day, the lecture hall is full of solemn and glorious atmosphere with all sorts of round fans offered from across the country and some thousands of fans functioning as charms against evil which have been prepared by the temple itself since the first month of the year. All the priests belonging to this temple conduct a Buddhist ceremony in the hall, and an offering of the court dance and music is made in the courtyard. At 4:00 p.m., heart-shaped fans, to which prayers are offered whole-heartedly, begin to be scattered to visitors from a tower called Ko-ro, literally Drum Turret. These fans are charms against thumder or fire, and on the farm, they are set up on the beds for rice seedlings to drive away harmful insects.
